Memory(Novel-Book1)

Prologue

A few days ago

“Will worth?” Calls the memory wiper’s assistant. I stand up from my seat and walk towards her. “Are you will worth?” She said when I was standing in front of her. I nod. “Perfect.” She says. “Please follow me.”

I follow her through the white double doors into a dark room with a white chair in the centre.

A light which was above the chair was shining on the chair only and nowhere else. It’s like we were the audience at a theatre and the chair was standing on the stage in the spotlight.

The chair was surrounded by machines. A bunch of wires connected the machines together.

I didn’t feel fear. The reason I was doing this was a good enough reason where fear didn’t matter to me anymore.

If I felt fear I wouldn’t want to do it and then there would be consequences.

A man in a white lab coat appears before us. “Hello Will.”

“Good morning Sir.” I say without smiling.

“Are you ready?” He says.

“Yes sir.” I replied.

“Please sit in the chair.”

I do as I am told.

The man stands in front of me. He starts to press several buttons on the machine. “The memory wipe will begin in 30 seconds.” He takes a bottle of yellow liquid out of his pocket.

“Drink this.” He says.

“What is it?”

“It’s a sedative. It will make you fall asleep. If you're awake during the memory wipe it will be painful and this will probably put you to sleep for a few days.”

He takes a syringe out of his other pocket and injects it into my arm.

“I didn’t say you could do that.” I say.

“Did I say you have a choice?” The man lifts an eyebrow.

“It’s my arm.” I say.

“It’s my memory wipe machine.” He says.

My vision started to blur and my eyes became heavy. They slowly started to close until everything went black.

Chapter one

Gap

3 days later(Present day)

Will woke up and saw his sister layla sitting beside him on his bed.

“How long have you been there?” He asks.

Layla shrugs. “I didn’t count but you have been asleep for 3 days. It must have been that sedative.”

“What sedative?”

“The sedative the doctor gave you.”

Since when did a doctor give him a sedative?

“How much of your memory was wiped?” Layla looks at Will with a concerned face and there was something else on her face as well but it disappeared before Will could figure out what it was.

“Layla, my memory wasn’t wiped.”

“You sure?”

“Yes. I think I would know if my own memory was wiped.”

“Really?”

“Yeah.”

“Ok. What happened last Thursday?”

Will tried to remember what happened last Thursday but his mind was blank and when he tried to remember what he did the whole of last week he couldn’t remember. Not a single thing.

“I can’t remember anything from last week at all.”

“You sure your memory wasn’t wiped?”

“I never agreed to my memory being wiped.”

“You did. You had a reason.”

“What was the reason?”

Layla remained silent.

Chapter Two

Refusal

Layla walked out of Will’s room and refused to say anything no matter how many times Will asked her.

When he tried to ask his parents they refused to say anything as well. Even his own twin sister Ana refused.

2 hours later, Will was on his bed trying to remember anything that would make the whole memory wipe make sense but his mind remained blank no matter how hard he tried.

“Still nothing?” Says Ana from the door. Will shakes his head. Why would he agree to his own memory being wiped? Was the reason that bad? What did he not want to remember?

“Ana?” He says.

“Yeah?” Says Ana looking up from her phone.

“Why is everyone refusing to tell me anything?”

“You told us not to.”

Chapter Three

The Poster

I tried to do some studying to distract myself from all this memory wipe business just for a little while when I noticed an A4 blue poster hanging off the edge of the desk beside my bed. I grab it and stare at it for a few long seconds.

I place the poster down on my desk. There were 2 men in white suits standing in front of a cream and white building. The name was unclear and they were clearly trying to advertise their business but the building or name wasn’t what I was interested in. The 2 men on the poster looked familiar and I’m sure I have seen them somewhere. I tried to remember but not a single thought or memory came into my head.

I ignored it thinking that maybe they look similar to 2 other people I know.

Chapter Four

Flashback

I was lying down on my bed staring at the ceiling 5 hours later, trying to come up with reasons why I would agree to my memory being wiped when an image came into my head.

I was standing near the corner of my school, there was nobody there as it was a very quiet street most of the time. Will could see the 2 men in the poster holding a little girl. He couldn’t see who the little girl was as she was too far but Will could tell that she looked unhappy and they were trying to…. “Will!” The little girl screamed. “Help!”

The girl knows her. He doesn’t know her though. So why does she…..? Wil suddenly remembered that every time he asked his parents, Layla and Ana about his reasons for the memory wipe they all looked devastated. If this really was a memory, could this be the reason? Is this little girl…..? He hasn’t seen his little sister Ella recently. Will looked at the little girl again. It was her. Ella.

The memory suddenly ended. Will couldn’t remember anything past the little section of the memory he saw but he knew there was more to the memory but he just couldn’t remember.

Will walks out of his room and knocks Ana’s door which was opposite his. “Yes?” Ana calls from inside. “ You can come in.” Will opens the door and as soon as he enters he asks “Do the reasons for the memory wipe have anything to do with Ella?” The same devastated face that he has seen on everyone’s face appeared on Ana’s. “Yes.” She says.

“Tell me what happened.”

“No.”

“Why? Please tell me.”

“No. You said not to say anything no matter what.”

“Please Ana.”

“I will tell you this and this only. It wasn’t your choice, not really you were kind of forced in some way.”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

Ana doesn’t say anything else. She stays silent.

Chapter Five

The Place where it all started

Will wasn’t able to convince Ana to say anything else but he managed to convince her to take him to the place where all of this started. He already obviously knew where it happened from the flashback he had but he thought that if he acted like he knew less Ana maybe might tell him more.

As they walked, Ana didn’t say a single word. She was too busy staring at her feet.

“This is the place.” Ana doesn’t look up from looking at her feet when she points to the middle of the quiet street. “We shouldn’t be here.”

“I don’t see what the harm is.”

“It can cause a lot more harm than you know.”

“What harm?”

“If you find out about what happened or remember every family member we know could….” Ana looks up and looks past Will but Will didn’t notice the direction of her gaze at first. He was too interested in what she was about to say.

“What will happen to every family member Ana?” Ana puts a finger to her lips. Will turns around. The 2 men from the poster were standing in the distance talking.

“Are those the 2 men who were with Ella?”

Ana nods. She was clearly too concerned about the 2 men since she didn’t question how Will knew that. “They killed her Will.”

“What? Why would I want to wipe my memory because of that?”

“That wasn’t the reason.”

“Then what was?”

“The 2 men forced me, didn't they?” Ana nods. “Why?”

“We should go.”

“No.”

“Please.”

“No.”

The 2 men turned around and looked straight at them. They slowly started to walk towards them. “If you agree to us leaving now.” Ana says. “I promise you I will tell you everything.”

“Ok.”

Chapter Six

The Truth

Will and Ana were in Ana’s room. Ana kept pacing up and down the room mumbling herself. She has been doing this for the past 10 mins and hasn’t said a single word to Will. “Ana. Please could you tell me why like you promised?”

Ana stops pacing and takes a deep breath. “No interruptions and questions at the end.”

“You saw those 2 men kill someone I’m not sure who you never told me who and those men are the same men who own the biggest and most successful architect company in the world.” Ana pauses. “Do you know who I am talking about?”

Will nods. Everyone knows them.

“You see they saw you the day that they killed that person and so they tried to keep you quiet but you refused and they couldn’t risk anybody finding out so they threatened you into you wiping your memory by saying they would kill your family and everyone you knew if you didn’t do it but you didn’t take them seriously. They killed Ella to show they were being serious and so you agreed to do it and told all of us to never tell you why.”

“Then how come after me telling you not to tell you why and after refusing this whole time you suddenly tell me?”

“Becuase if those men even suspected that you remembered something they may assume that you never had your memory wiped and then they would kill everyone.”

Will stays silent for a few moments. He was struggling to believe that all of this was true even though he knew that Ana would never lie about something that serious.

Chapter Seven

The Decision

Will knew that he would have to decide whether to tell police about what the men did or to keep quiet so he is not risking anybody’s life.

He felt like something was missing though. When Ana said that she doesn’t know who the men killed he could tell that she was lying but why?

What does she not want him to know?

Will tried to ask Layla and his parents but instead of lying they refused to answer.

Who did the 2 men kill? Should he tell the police or not?

He has to tell the police. “Ana I left my phone in my room. Can I use your phone to call the police?” Ana hesitates and doesn’t move. Layla suddenly bursts into the room.

“Before you call the police you should know who they killed.”

“Who?” Will says.

“They killed Ana.”

Will looks at Ana. How could it be Ana? She is standing right there.

Ana smiles and starts to laugh. “I knew you would find out one day.”
