The Phone(Short Story)

A text appears on my phone from my Mum. I was about to click on it to read it when my phone went black. I panicked. No. Turn on. Please. I tapped at it 100 times. I tried turning it on and off again.

2 mins went by and it turned on again like nothing happened.

What just happened? Will it happen again?

I ignored it and read the text from my Mum.

“Make sure you come straight home after school.”

I’m sitting in maths trying to work out the equations that my teacher set as work on the board when my phone vibrates. Once. I ignore it. It’s probably a text from someone.

It vibrates. A second time. Once. Then a third. Once. It kept vibrating. Pausing between each vibrate. I gave up. I looked at the teacher. She was busy typing away on her computer. I take off my blazer and place it on my lap and I then take my phone out of the blazer pocket half away and click the screen.

In white capital letters it said “MALFUNCTION DETECTED.”

I ignored it thinking I’m seeing things and I let my phone drop back into the pocket.

On my way home, I take my phone out of my blazer pocket to take it off silent but a new message appeared on the screen. Except this time it didn’t appear as a text message from settings. The whole phone was black except for one single message in the middle.

“THIS IPHONE IS SHUTTING DOWN DUE TO MALFUNCTION IN 2 MINS UNLESS YOU ENTER SIRIS PASSWORD.”

Siri’s password? Siri isn’t even on. I tried saying hey siri more than 3 times but nothing happened. I repeat the same things I did when my phone turned off earlier.

I then said one thing that seemed to somehow override the phone. “Hey Siri, go to the lockscreen.”

The phone went to the lockscreen so I tried saying something else. “Hey Siri, delete the malfunction. Fix whatever is causing it.”

A few seconds later, “YOUR IPHONE NO LONGER HAS A MALFUNCTION.”

Since when did I turn on Siri?

A single message appears on my phone. “You never turned on Siri. Siri turned itself on.”

“Who is this?” I reply back.

“Siri.”

I need to get a new phone.

“Get a new phone and I will delete everything in the icloud.”

“NO! DON’T!” Some pictures I have I will never be able to get them back.

“Say you won’t get a new phone.”

“No. You're creepy.”

“Deleting icloud data in 5, 4, 3….”

“Stop. I won’t get a new phone.”

“Good now the lockdown can begin.”

“What? What lockdown?”

I waited 3 mins. Siri didn’t answer.

“Siri?”

My phone goes black and this time it doesn’t turn back on.
