The Robot Doll(Short Story)

It was my little sister’s 5th birthday. Normally she would have piles of presents on her birthday from family members, friends even neighbours but this year she got one present.

That one present was a robot. A robot Doll. Any little kid would think that a robot doll is normal. They would love it and care for it like any other toy they had.

As soon as I set my eyes on the doll, I knew there was something wrong. The way it looked. The way that when you press certain buttons on the remote control it would start to walk and talk.

I understand that it is a robot but I have always been cautious about robots. Now I have one in my house. Is that normal? Is it safe?

One night, at exactly 8:00pm, I was sitting on my bed reading a book. I put the book down just for a moment when my phone was ringing. The doll was just standing there at the end of my bed.

“Hello. You're the little girl’s older brother, aren’t you?” It said.

The only thing I’d ever heard it say is “hi my name is Avery. Nice to meet you.” The instruction manual even said that it can only say those words. How did it go from saying that to saying what it just said to me now? How is it even possible?

“So are you just going to sit there, boy?” The doll says. “Why not say hi back or introduce yourself. We are living in the same house after all.”

Introduce myself? Okay you want me to introduce myself. I’ll introduce myself.

“My name is Abdullah.” My real name is Yusuf. “It’s nice to meet you Avery.”

“Nice to meet you too Yusuf.” WHAT?! I never told my real name to it. My little sister never mentioned my name to it. Not even my parents or anyone else. How? “That’s right Yusuf. I know your name. So there is no point lying to me. I will know when you're lying.”

I tried to reach for my phone to call the police or anyone who can help me but as soon as I picked my phone up the battery suddenly drained. It had been on 56% just a few minutes earlier. How? I tried to plug it in the charger but the doll suddenly jumped onto the desk beside my bed and bit through the phone charger wire. It then jumped back onto the end of my bed.

“Your phone is useless when I am around.”

“What do you want?” I said. I made sure that my fear didn’t show in my voice.

“Nothing from you.” It said.

 “Then why are you here?”

“You don’t need to worry about that.” It said. “I promise I won’t hurt you or anyone you know. Physically.” It smiles eerily.

“What’s your dream Yusuf? What do you want to be when you're older?”

“Um, I haven't decided yet.” I said truthfully.

“My dream.” It says in a croaky voice. “It is to be here when your family no longer lives in this house anymore.”

“Do you mean when we all die?”

“No. Just when you're not here anymore.”

“What do you mean?”

“I guess you have to find out.” It started to cackle like a witch. I tried to run to the door but it appeared in front of me and said “No escaping me.”

It jumped up really high and it hit me hard in the side of my head before I could react or try to do something. I dropped to the floor with a loud thud.
