The Rose(Short Story)

I walk to my garden at the back of my house and water my roses. I love roses. It’s my favourite flower.

As I water them, I notice one of the petals of the roses was moving in a way that a rose wouldn’t move.

I didn’t think much of it as I thought that I just imagined it.

I walk back inside my house.

That night, I fell asleep letting the thought of seeing my roses in the morning again comfort me.

In the morning when I was on my way to water my roses again all of them were tangled up. You see my roses are a bit like brothers and sisters. They are always fighting each other and whenever they are tangled up it means they are fighting. Other people have always said that’s not normal but I don’t see what the problem is.

“My precious roses, what did I tell you about fighting?” I say to them. I have always been able to understand them. Again other people say that’s not normal but I don’t see what the problem is.

“We are very sorry. We couldn’t help it. You see we got into an argument about who would do what but then we ended up beating each other up.”  The roses reply.

“Now that's alright we all get into fights sometimes but it’s the importance of learning that we don’t do it again. Does everyone understand?”

“Of course.”  The roses reply.

“What do you mean by you were having a fight over who would do what?” I say.

“It’s your birthday tomorrow so we were planning a nice surprise for you.”  The roses reply.

I don’t reply but a wide smile forms on my face. The roses will know how happy I am based on my facial expression.

Tomorrow morning came quicker than I thought it would. It was my 39th birthday.

As I went out to my garden I noticed blood stains everywhere.

“My precious roses.” I say. “Where did these blood stains come from?”

“From the human we ate.”  The roses replied.

“Ok well please make sure that you don’t do it…..Wait what? You ate a human?” I say.

“Yes, that was the birthday surprise. We ate the human for you. To show how pleased we are that you turned  39. We were arguing about who would eat the human but we decided to eat it together.”  The roses replied.

I slowly started to back away.

“Where are you going? We weren’t done with the surprise. We were planning on eating you too.”

“Why do this?”

“You're not the first. Our ancestors have been doing it for generations and now it’s our turn to eat you.”

I ran as fast as I could but right before I put my foot into the house, one of the rose vines wrapped around my foot. I tried desperately to pull it off but it was too strong. It all of a sudden pulled me backwards. I fell unconscious when my head hit a hard rock.
